Support for Parents

There are a number of resources to provide support and information to parents of children with learning issues.

Your school district can provide you with information about its S.E.P.T.A. program, the Special Education Parent Teacher Association. Here you can meet other parents from your school district who are dealing with some of the same issues you face.

The Manhattan JCC, located on Amsterdam Avenue at 76th Street, offers separate groups for parents of young children, elementary school students and adolescents with special learning needs.

The Samuel Field YM&YWHA in Little Neck, Queens holds parent discussion groups as part of its Center for Helping Individuals with Learning Disabilities (CHILD) program. Contact Gerrie Mayerhoff at 718-225-6750, extension 262, and ask to be placed on the mailing list.

The Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center in East Hills, Long Island runs a program on Parenting Children with Special Learning Needs. Contact Cara Greene, CSW at 516-484-1545.

Resources for Children with Special Needs, a non-profit organization dealing with children with both learning and other issues, holds parent training sessions throughout New York City.

Please let us hear from you about programs for parents that you have found helpful.
