Introduction

Children and adolescents struggling with learning problems are often challenged by an array of social and emotional issues beyond those faced by other young people. Poor school performance can impact self-esteem and lead to teasing by insensitive peers and even teachers. Some learning problems, such as certain non verbal learning issues, are themselves characterized by poor social skills. And attention and hyperactivity can affect the social life of children and adults of all ages.

A book by Richard Lavoie, It's So Much Work To Be Your Friend, (Touchstone, 2005) deals with many of these issues, giving a sensitive explanation of the social difficulties faced by children with learning differences and offering practical suggestions for helping these children navigate their complex social world. We recommend it highly for both parents and teachers.

Although almost all of the resources and programs we include are for young people who have not completed their education, we have come across a program at the Manhattan JCC for young adults with learning or related issues who have completed college. We know that even with a college degree, young people with learning differences can need social and emotional support. This program, called Adaptations provides social events and career and personal counseling.

There are numerous barriers to finding resources to help children with learning issues get the social and emotional support they need. There are a limited number of programs and professionals equipped to deal with the special needs of these young people. Some of the best programs and practioners are extremely expensive. We have found some excellent programs and professionals and welcome your feedback and suggestions to help us expand our listings.
